Have you ever wondered why little boys (and sometimes big boys) are so attracted to super heroes? Today we ate lunch with the Clancy’s. They have a 4 year old daughter and a little boy who just turned 3. They also have a bunch of dress up clothes. When Mishael saw the superman outfit he wasted no time in shedding his clothes and donning the super heroes’ garments.
I remember when I was about the same age I had an old batman costume I liked to wear. Actually, I think my mother had made it for my older brother and he had passed it on to me. I believe that batman suit was later passed on to my three younger brothers. It may have even got some use from my nephew. I’ll have to check and see if it is still around next time I visit my parents. Anyway, it wasn’t one of the store bought outfits most kids wear today. If it weren’t for the bat cutout on the front of it one could have easily mistaken me for a giant grey mouse with floppy ears and black shorts. However, that really didn’t matter to me. When I wore it I was convinced that I could save the world from the evils of Joker and Penguin.
Is it just me or are little boys universally fascinated with super heroes? Why do we have super heroes at all if it is not because there is a perceived need to be saved from something or someone? There is something that satisfies a deep need when we see superman save Lois Lane from the clutches of the evil Lex Luther. Maybe little boys better that the rest of us recognize that we all need a super hero who can save us.
Psa 18:2 Jehovah is my strength, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my rock; I will trust in Him; He is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.
Psa 18:3 I will call on Jehovah, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.
