#31 The Biggest Mistake Dads Make

Many fathers are making a big mistake when it comes to raising their children and most of them don’t even know they are doing it!

In this episode of “Now is the Time” I talk about the biggest mistake that many dads, even Christian dads are making today. I also give you some helpful advice on how to avoid that mistake.

Books

I highly recommend checking out Roland Warren’s book “Bad Dads of the Bible” I just finished reading it and found it to be helpful and thought provoking for myself.

In the book Warren investigates the problems of 8 different dads from the Bible. Despite the fact that some of them where known for their relationship with God, like David, they still made a critical mistakes as fathers.

For me one of the the most convicting was the story of Eli whose sons, Hophni and Phinehas turned out so bad that God eventually takes their lives! It’s sobering to think the Eli was the spiritual leader of Israel and yet he did not spiritual lead his sons!

    Great podcast!
Being a good parent, a Godly parent, takes more time and effort than many think they have, but we must understand the importance and value of it and trust God to bless our efforts.
Like you said, part of the problem is that parents aren’t nurturing their own relationships with Christ. We are lacking in knowledge of God’s Word and don’t understand God’s love. We neglect the Holy Spirit and therefore we are neglecting our families.

I find that my kids have an amazing way of exposing my own weaknesses! If I don’t bring the problems they show me before the Lord then I fail them as a father. I like how you put it TC, neglecting the Holy Spirit is really in the end neglecting our family!

I will look forward to listening to this podcast a little later on. Fatherhood is something that’s been on my mind of late. I don’t have children yet, and didn’t have a father from a very young age. Not having my own real life template of what fatherhood looks like has often made me wonder about the kind of job I’d do should God bless me with sons or daughters of my own. It’s always left a question mark in my mind. I can only hope and pray I’d do a good job should the opportunity come.

Micah, I hope that you do get the opportunity to have your own children some day. It’s one of God’s greatest ways to stretch our faith and grow is in ways that we never would have considered.

Great Podcast Caleb! I’ve found when we place God as our #1 everything else works out, including raising our children in the ways of the Lord.

Thanks Dan! You’re right, get your priorities straight and everything else will sort of align it’s self!
