Last week our family did something that I really wasn’t planning to tell you about. The truth is I almost felt a little ashamed to tell you.
You may have noticed that recently I’ve been quieter than normal online. I haven’t posted to my blog or sent out a newsletter in 2 weeks and that’s unusual for me!
I had a good reason for my silence and now I’m ready to share it with you.
We took a vacation!
That’s right, we stopped doing ministry for a while and rested from our work!
As a missionary there’s a silent pressure, a quiet expectation that makes it difficult to take a break and even more difficult to tell others about it.
And then there are other reasons why we so rarely take the rest we need like:
- The desire to look busy and make a good impression on supporters.
- The fact that ministry is a never-ending task.
- The inability to say “no” to ministry partners when they ask for help.
- The false believe that if I don’t do it, it won’t get done.
- The misconception that everything depends upon me.
- The feeling that I am being lazy unless I’m fully engaged in the work.
It’s dangerous to let the things mentioned above keep you from resting. Our bodies, and spirits need rest and if we don’t give them rest they will take it from us in ways that can be harmful to our health, our spirit, our mind and even our families!
So let me tell you about what we did while we were on vacation.
We Worshiped Together
Part of our rest was attending out mission’s biennial conference in Budapest, Hungary. We missed 2 days of the conference because of our breakdown in Romania but were able to get in on the latter part of the conference.
It’s hard to describe the joy that comes from worshiping together with a hundred other missionaries from all over Eastern and Central Europe! It’s that kind of worship that revives the soul!
We are grateful for the team from Forest Hills Baptist Church who sacrificed their time to minister to us during the conference through some awesome Christ centered, theologically sound and acoustically beautiful music!
We Marveled at God’s Creation Together
After the conference we drove about 6 hours West to the Austrian Alps were we rented a little apartment for a few days. We spent our time there enjoying the majestic mountains and magnificent lakes.
We found time to go for a hike in the snow and to explore a few mountain villages.
We Read together
Since we were going to spend a fair amount of time in the car I purchased an audio book for the family to listen to. Unbroken follows the true story of a WWII Louis Zamperini pilot who survived 47 days at sea in a life raft and many months of torture in a Japanese prison camp.
It’s a book that intrigued the whole family and it’s certainly worth your time to read it!
We Explored Castles Together
It’s not hard to find castles in Europe, so we went on several tours through ancient castles and learned about their history. We even toured “Dracula’s” castle the day before Halloween and we found that it wasn’t scary at all!
What We Didn’t do!
Maybe even more important than what we did is what we didn’t do.
- I stayed off of e-mail, mostly.
- We didn’t check the Ukrainian war news.
- We didn’t work on any projects or write any reports.
- I didn’t prepare for any sermons or teaching
- The kids didn’t do any schoolwork.
And Now It’s Time to Get Back to Work
We just got back this past weekend and that means it’s time to get back to work. We feel refreshed and ready to go. We are excited about several ministry opportunities this month, but I’ll save the details for a later post.

November 3, 2014Caleb, Thank you for sharing. Yes, it is important to rest. We mustn’t allowing pressures control our resting. Like you said, “if we don’t give them rest they will take it from us in ways that can be harmful to our health, our spirit, our mind and even our families!” Yes! I’m so happy you allowed the Holy Spirit to minister to your soul! 😀

November 5, 2014Thank you Kimberly! I hope you guys are staying healthy and doing well in S.CA

November 5, 2014Thank you Caleb. We’re healthy and doing well. The only thing is, Paul’s work contract is ending Dec 12th and he’s now looking for a new job. Please pray that God put Paul right where He wants him.

November 3, 2014So glad you all were able to take a break and spend time together as a family. That is so important and often overlooked/undervalued in today’s hurried society.
Unbroken is going to be made into a movie (I think it comes out on Christmas day, but I could be wrong). I heard the movie has gotten some critic because it down plays the role Christ played in Louis’ life. I haven’t read the book. I’d love to hear your take on the movie compared to the book if you ever watch it.
Welcome back.
Caleb
November 5, 2014I also read recently that they are making a movie about it. Certainly there is a very powerful message of forgiveness that can only be understood with the message of Jesus in that book.

November 4, 2014Glad you were able to get a vacation Caleb! My reason seem so silly but they are reasons. One, we have trouble agreeing on what to do and where to go. With our kids separated It is hard not to see them whenever we have the chance. Second, is $$$.
Caleb
November 5, 2014Money can be a problem, however, I’ve also found that some of the best getaway’s don’t cost much at all! The important thing is to plan them well and be disciplined about staying away from work during that time.

November 5, 2014We make a point to take time off regularly, and it is something our whole family looks forward to now. Good to hear you took time off and that it was refreshing. Hope you can make it a regular thing!
Caleb
November 5, 2014Yes, our kids are already looking forward to the next vacation. I think we may take a few days off in the Spring to go to Western Ukraine. Knowing that there is a vacation planned in the future helps make it easier to keep working sometimes.

November 5, 2014Planning trips give as much of an opportunity for connecting as does the actual trip itself. We even spend a lot of time planning the journey to and from our destination too. I read somewhere that always having something to look forward to doing together strengthens a marriage too. So, even beyond the R&R it provides, vacations and time off does a lot more for our key relationships.

November 5, 2014Good for you, Caleb. It’s a wise man that can carry out in action what most of us just talk about. I struggle to break free from work.
Caleb
November 5, 2014I have a great wife and kids that remind me that I need to take a break! Sounds like you better take a little time off soon Floyd!

November 6, 2014I have a secret too, I also just came back from a 12 day vacation with my family:) It was relaxing and refreshing.
Caleb
November 6, 2014Wow, that’s great Dan! I hope you and your family had a refreshing time!

November 7, 2014Yes we did. It was a nice break from a demanding schedule.

November 7, 2014I’m shocked! A missionary on vacation? Just kidding…Glad you had a restful time!
Caleb
November 7, 2014Loren, I think some people are shocked. After all missionaries are known for taking vacations!
Micah
November 7, 2014Hey good for you, Caleb, and well done for taking the decision to refresh yourselves. It’s a trait I’ve noticed in leaders that they find it hard to be as attentive to themselves as they are to others. Time off is as important as time on.
Caleb
November 7, 2014That is a danger Micah! It’s so important to realize that we can not minister to others if we don’t take care of ourselves!
